When Shouldn't I Exercise?

The top two times when you shouldn’t exercise.

First one: when you’re ill. Our body can only take a certain number of stressors to function correctly, so when a new one is added, often another has to give.

If you’re just suffering with the sniffles and feel up to training, then it’s fine to go ahead and train (just preferably not in a gym where you’re likely to pass it on to others!”

But if you’re feeling genuinely unwell, then the first stressor you want to remove is exercise.

The next time you shouldn’t exercise is… too frequently.

Our muscles need time to recover, and when we don’t give them enough time, then guess what? They can’t perform as well, meaning that we get less out of the next workout.

Not only that, but if overloading the body with the stressor of exercise, this has can have a knock-on effect of lowering the immune system.

So next thing you know, you’re being forced to not train because you’re ill!

And… you’re more prone to injury, meaning that’ll be the end of that and you can forget training that body part for a few weeks! (Note that having an injury does not mean you can’t train – it just means your coach needs to adapt your training plan to work around said injury 😉)

All of us are unique in the number of stressors we can take. Whether these are from sleep deprivation, caloric deficit, amount of exercise, stress levels from work and relationships, whatever it may be.

And it can be incredibly difficult to establish on our own, which we should ditch and which we should push forward with.

Which is why having a good coach by your side is key.

Not only because they have the knowledge to know which stressors to immediately remove to promote your recovery and progress.

But also, because they can help you in making an informed decision on which course of action is best for you and your unique set of circumstances.

Setting you a clear plan which instead of you feeling you’re not sticking to, is giving you 100% permission to drop something, which if you’d done off your own back, would have likely lead to you believing you were “slacking”.

Do you feel guilty when you don’t exercise or stick to your calories when you’re ill?

Maybe it's time you got yourself a coach ;-)
